There are two different options for which bandages will be used:

  • A wrap that stays on for two hours
  • The Tegaderm bandage

Vaseline, saran wrap and tensor bandage is applied to the tattoo. This wrap stays on for roughly two hours, and afterwards is cleaned and treated as a raw wound.

This is a good option for clients with highly sensitive skin, or if the tattoo is in an area where the Tegaderm would not stay on.

Tegaderm Bandage

This leaves the tattoo bandaged for 5-7 days (or as instructed by artist). The bandage is removed by peeling all corners and edges. Peel away from self slowly – it is recommended to remove this in the shower.

The Tegaderm bandage is permeable, and as such, you tattoo will start healing right away underneath it.

You can shower with the bandage on without affecting it. If you find air bubbles or fluid buildup, it is recommended to pop these bubbles with a sterilized needle, and purge with a clean paper towel or cloth. Poke sideways, NOT towards yourself, and only make a small hole to avoid compromising the bandage.

Be careful – the fluid buildup can leak from the bandage, so be aware of your sheets and clothing. The best thing to do, once the bandage is on, is to just leave it be for the duration of the time remaining (assuming no air bubbles or fluid build-up).

After removal, there may be adhesive on your tattoo – gently rub to remove it. Wash the skin after removal, being sure to properly clean it off with unscented soap with a bare hand, and pat dry with a clean/new towel.

WARNING: As your new tattoo is tender, removal of this bandage may be uncomfortable. Do not peel bandage up or down. Do not peel aggressively, as this may damage the tattoo. Do not pick at bandage or touch it constantly. Some irritation around the bandage is normal. If irritation persists, please contact the shop and/or a doctor, as it may be an allergic reaction to the bandage or adhesive.

  • Re-bandage the tattoo once the bandage is completely removed.
  • Allow direct sunlight on the tattoo for the first 2-3 weeks.
  • Pick or scratch the tattoo while it is peeling.
  • Swim, take a bath, or enter a hot tub or sauna for one month or until the tattoo is completely healed.
  • Shave or wax area until tattoo is completely healed.
  • Apply Vaseline (petroleum jelly), alcohol, healing ointments (polysporin), or sunblock to a fresh tattoo.
